Florida State Soccer Dominates Stanford with 5-1 Victory to Claim National Championship

The Florida State women’s soccer team completed an undefeated season with a 5-1 victory over previously unbeaten Stanford to clinch the 2023 national championship in Cary, N.C. This landmark victory solidified the Seminoles’ dominance, outscoring opponents 53-5 in the second halves of games this season. Furthermore, this remarkable achievement marked the program’s fourth national championship and the first under the guidance of second-year head coach Brian Pensky. With a record of 22-0-1, Florida State became the first undefeated national champion since Stanford in 2011.

Despite Stanford’s reputation for being the top-ranked team in scoring defense, the Seminoles were able to aggressively exploit their defense, scoring two goals in under 30 seconds early in the game. This electrifying performance set the tone for the match and propelled Florida State to lead the game. Although Stanford managed to score their first goal of the NCAA Tournament early in the second half, the Seminoles responded with a three-goal barrage, ultimately leaving no doubt as to who the dominant team in the 2023 season was.

Beata Olsson played a crucial role in the victory, contributing not only with a critical second-half goal but also with two assists. Freshman All-American Jordynn Dudley also made a significant impact, scoring a goal and providing an assist. Head coach Brian Pensky expressed confidence in the team’s ability to score, asserting that the goals were always going to come, and indeed, they did, breaking through a defense that had only allowed 10 goals all season.

Senior captain Leilanni Nesbeth expressed her gratitude and described the victory as an unforgettable moment, marking her final appearance in the team’s uniform. The triumphant moment was characterized by a strong sense of unity and appreciation for the program. The Florida State women’s soccer team’s historic triumph not only earned them the national championship but also solidified their place among the best in the history of the sport. This victory will be remembered as a remarkable achievement in the annals of college soccer. Fans of FSU football are encouraged to share their thoughts and discuss this memorable victory on the Tribal Council.
